Essen Motor Show 2015

The Classic & Prestige Salon: automotive fair and top-level international classic car marketplace

More than 250 selected classic cars for sale at the vintage car fair

The crowning glory of the vintage and classic car season: the 48th Essen Motor Show taking place from 28 November to 6 December (27 November: Preview Day) will once again host the Classic & Prestige Salon – one of the most important German classic car fairs – as the highlight of the season finale. More than 250 selected classic cars will be available for sale from over 25 of the most renowned international classic car dealers in Hall 1 at Messe Essen. The title of “International Marketplace for Vintage Cars, Young Classics, Historic Motorsport, Classic Cars and Prestige Automobiles” is a very apt description of the comprehensive offers of this marketplace held during the automotive fair. It features everything from a Ferrari worth several million euros to well-preserved VW Golf GTIs from the 1970s to 1990s. In line with the theme of the Essen Motor Show, the majority of the offers and the show exhibits are classic cars with a decidedly sporty touch.

The focus of Hall 1, which has been reserved for the Classic & Prestige Salon, is the thrilling special classic car preview show by S.I.H.A., organiser of the largest classic car marketplace at the Essen Motor Show for 34 years now. This special preview show has since become something of a tradition in the long-standing success story of the Salon: according to the theme of “Jubilee Preview”, S.I.H.A. will host preview events for the fourth time, showcasing rare and spectacular vehicles for interesting jubilees in the coming year. And every year, the appeal is enhanced even further by a special additional titbit. This year’s title is: “Jubilee Preview, 100 Years of BMW – History + Motorsport”.

Jubilee Preview, 100 Years of BMW – History + Motorsport 1916–2016

A thrilling presentation is on the agenda, featuring selected sports and racing cars from BMW’s collection, which will celebrate its 100th anniversary next year: in the official company history, 7 March 1916 is given as the foundation date of the Bayerische Motoren Werke AG. During the preview event, S.I.H.A. will showcase the most spectacular and important automotive milestones, along with a number of motorcycles and sidecars from BMW’s racing history: a total of ten special racing sport highlights will be shown. These will include one of the legendary BMW 328s from the late 1930s, a BMW 700 Coupé, Hillclimb version, from the 1960s, a BMW 3.0 CSL group 2 touring car from the 1970s, a BMW M1 Procar from 1979/1980, a BMW 635 CSi group A racing coupé from the early 1980s, and at least one BMW M3 DTM. S.I.H.A. has one further trump up its sleeve. Without giving too much away, we can say that while this car does not originate directly from racing sport, it could be considered the direct continuation of the BMW racing sport history in the future.

50th birthday of Alpina

A further jubilee will round off the S.I.H.A. special show: the company Alpina, a well-known manufacturer of exclusive automobiles, located in the Bavarian town of Buchloe, will celebrate its 50th anniversary this year – and to mark the occasion it will be presenting three automobile milestones at the Classic & Prestige Salon: a BMW ALPINA B7 S Turbo Coupé based on the BMW 630 CSi (E 24), a BMW ALPINA A4 based on the BMW E21 3 series, and a current Alpina B3 GT3.

The Jubilee Preview is thus more than just an insight into a future anniversary and the presentation of a relevant birthday. In this way, S.I.H.A. also points to the next Techno-Classica Essen world show, at which the main focus will be on the legendary Mille Miglia endurance race held in 1955. The Mercedes-Benz 300 SLR, with which Juan Manuel Fangio – without a co-driver – achieved a sensational second place in 1955 after 1,597 kilometres of racing, offers a taste of the racing cars to be presented at the Techno-Classica Essen world show from 6 to 10 April 2016. A car of this type with the car number 658 from the Mercedes-Benz museum will grace the S.I.H.A. stand in Hall 1.

Club centres for classic car clubs and the Concours d’Elégance

These special shows make it clear that the Classic & Prestige Salon is more than just a marketplace and more than the traditional final major vintage car show of the season: for the fifth time in a row, S.I.H.A. will also set up its own club centres in Hall 8.1 and 9.1 to enable the classic car community to present itself to the public.

A Concours d’Elégance is another popular tradition at the Classic & Prestige Salon: to give classic car dealers an additional incentive to bring only the best of the best with them to Essen, a jury comprising internationally-renowned classic car experts will select the finest and most elegant vintage car from the range on offer to acknowledge as the “Best of Show”. Providers of classic car spare parts, accessories, vintage car literature, classic model cars and automotive art will present their offerings in Halls 6.1, 8.1 and 9.1 – a total of around 120 exhibitors devoted to the topics of classic cars and collector vehicles.
